CHOFU AMERICAN
HIGH SCHOOL
Tokyo, Japan
Chofu was only opened for 10 years ~
from 1964 until 1974. The Chofu schools were built to accommodate
students when Washington Heights schools were closed so that the
Japanese could use the land for the 1964 Olympics. Chofu was the
prototype for modular scheduling. The successful pilot program for
modular scheduling for secondary education at Chofu led to DoDDS
implementing modular scheduling regionally, then world-wide. Chofu
High School also had the first, and to my knowledge, the only
marching band in the Pacific during that time, and the first Military
Dependent Drill Team. They were founded by
Dr. John Brokaw who taught at Chofu HS for many years.
